Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) Therapy
SDF Treatment for Children
Silver Diamine Fluoride therapy is a non-invasive treatment option for tooth decay. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2014, SDF is a topical antibacterial and remineralizing agent. The goal is to stop the tooth decay process that causes further damage to tooth structure. But the treatment with SDF does not completely eliminate the need for dental fillings or crowns to repair function or esthetics.
SDF is an excellent treatment option for a child who is unable to tolerate restorative treatments such as fillings or crowns, as it helps to avoid or postpone more complex restorations. SDF also helps to relieve tooth sensitivity.
The treatment is quick, easy, and painless. It is also very affordable and can be applied on both primary and permanent teeth. A small amount of the SDF is applied onto cavities. Only the decayed portion of the tooth will be affected and stained. The healthy tooth structure will not change its color. For maximum efficacy, re-application is required. Proper diet and oral hygiene care including daily brushing and flossing are still very important for long-term success.
