Tooth Decay Treatment for Children
Fluoride works by stopping the tooth decay process. It can even reverse early tooth decay. It keeps tooth enamel nice and strong. It also prevents cavity-causing germs from attacking teeth. Therefore, fluoride can keep teeth healthy or even cavity-free.
Fluoride treatment can be performed at your child’s routine dental visit. Topical fluoride varnish can easily be painted or brushed on the tooth enamel after a dental cleaning. However, the fluoride treatment alone may not be completely effective in preventing cavities without proper tooth brushing. It works best when a child is using the right amount of fluoride toothpaste, flossing regularly, getting regular dental care, and eating a healthy diet.
Instructions after fluoride varnish application:
- Do not brush or floss for at least 4-6 hours.
- Children can eat and drink immediately after application.
- Avoid hard, sticky and hot foods or drinks as well as products containing alcohol (i.e., beverages, oral rinses, etc.) for 4-6 hours.
- We recommend avoiding carbonated beverages the duration of the day.
